NEWS: OptaPro expands data science team

OptaPro is delighted to announce the addition of two new data scientists to its team.

Tom Worville and Sam Gregory have joined Perform Group, where they’ll be working on the OptaPro brand alongside Johannes Harkins. Both Tom and Sam are already familiar faces in the football analytics industry, having established themselves over the past year as some of the most innovative, engaging and open analysts in this network.

Tom, who graduated from the University of Leeds this summer with an economics degree, has long been a contributor and an innovator in this community. Tom founded the Analytics FC blog, before later re-branding it as a consultancy.

Tom and Sam also worked together to create a football analytics podcast in 2015, which will continue to run as they begin new roles in this industry.

Sam has recently graduated from the London School of Economics with an MA in economics. Earlier this year, Sam presented at the OptaPro Analytics Forum, discussing the potential value of varying an attack. Sam’s participation at the Forum means he already has first-hand experience in working extensively with Opta data and presenting statistical analysis directly to practitioners.

Sam began his analytics career writing for Sportsnet in 2014, and has also written for StatsBomb and Analytics FC.

Johannes Harkins, OptaPro’s lead data scientist, said: “We are delighted to have both Tom and Sam join the team.

“As advanced analytics within professional football progresses, the arrival of two new data scientists of this calibre will allow us to significantly develop our work and provide support to clients with our in-depth statistical analysis.”

Discussing his appointment, Sam said:

"Having been involved in football analytics for a few years, I'm excited to start working full-time with the OptaPro team. I'm especially looking forward to working alongside Tom and Johannes, two analysts I have a lot of respect for and who have produced some of the most interesting recent work in analytics."

Tom commented:

“I’m really proud to have the opportunity to join the growing data scientist team at OptaPro. I’m looking forward to working alongside two excellent analysts in Sam and Johannes, whom I’m excited to learn from and collaborate with going forward.”
