BLOG: OptaPro at the Toulon Tournament

OptaPro has been in the south of France since the Toulon Tournament began at the end of last month, collecting data from every match and supporting the participating teams with data-led analysis.

At the time of writing, 20 matches have been played with the 3rd place playoff and final due to take place tomorrow (Saturday 10th June).

The tournament, now in its 45th year, remains a focal point for young talent, and has seen players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane participate in previous years.

Below is a snapshot from the tournament – underpinned by Pro Portal, OptaPro’s live, online data centre.

Day one: Cuba’s 1-1 draw with Japan was a game of two contrasting halves when analysing their wide play. 50.6% of their attacks occurred down the right-hand side in the first half, compared to 30.8% in the second.

Angola’s 18-year-old poaching striker, Chico Banza, has taken a total of 11 shots this tournament, hitting the target four times and scoring four goals.

On day seven, England’s 7-1 victory over Cuba saw the first hat-trick of the tournament, scored by Sheffield Wednesday youngster George Hirst.

In the same game, David Brooks’ dominant midfield performance was capped off with five chances created, two assists and a goal. Brooks ended the game with an 87% pass completion, rising to 88.9% in the final third as well as winning six of his eight duels.

Jean-Phillipe Krasso came off the Ivory Coast bench and scored the winning goal in the 39th minute of the second semi-final against Czech Republic on 8th June. He showcased his close control and his ability to beat his man by completing the most dribbles in the game (five) and the most in the tournament (14) to date.
