NEWS: OptaPro to host first soccer analytics event in USA

OptaPro is hosting its first soccer analytics event in the USA, taking place in Philadelphia on 17th January.

The event will offer a unique opportunity for professional teams and federations to further enhance their knowledge and understanding of how the application of data and analytics can inform decision-making across match analysis, opposition scouting and recruitment.

OptaPro has worked with the region’s leagues, teams and federation for some time, and this event offers an opportunity for industry peers to come together and share best practice and discuss new approaches within soccer analytics.

OptaPro has previously held events in the UK through the OptaPro Analytics Forum, and hosted its first conference in Germany in March last year.

Speakers at this month's invitation-only event include Will Spearman from Hudl, who will deliver a analytical presentation that extends beyond expected goal models, analysing how teams create scoring opportunities.

Joining Will is 21st Club, who will be represented by Ben Marlow and Luis Usier. This presentation will focus on data's influences within recruitment strategies and a team's broader soccer operations.

OptaPro’s Johannes Harkins will also present, applying data to provide an in-depth analysis of team styles and performance.

Also taking will be a panel discussion that includes Devin Pleuler (manager of analytics, Toronto FC), Lucy Rushton (head of technical recruitment and analysis, Atlanta United), Oliver Gage (head of performance analysis and technical recruitment, Houston Dynamo) and Tyler Heaps (manager of analytics and research, U.S. Soccer).

The four practitioners will discuss their own experiences of implementing data and analytical processes within professional sport, their working styles and relationships with coaches and their thoughts on the wider soccer analytics industry.
