NEWS: OptaPro releases 2018 MLS regular season review

Article by Andy Cooper

In recent years, OptaPro has produced detailed end-of-season reviews, which have been shared with clubs around the world.

These reviews apply advanced metrics to deliver key performance insights, at both team and player level. The analysis uses data to identify key stylistic differences in the playing styles between teams across a league and compares the quality of chances being created and conceded.

For the very first time, OptaPro is making two of these reviews available in the public domain, with the publication of the 2018 MLS and NWSL regular season reviews.

In addition to playing styles, these reviews also apply the sequence framework and new Opta qualifiers to offer fresh insights into player involvement in creating chances, as well analysing key decision-making in front of goal.

Key findings from the 2018 MLS review include:

– MLS Cup winners Atlanta United had the highest open play xG output.

– New York Red Bulls were the most direct team in possession and forced the most high-field turnovers.

– Over 35% of Colorado’s non-penalty goals came from set-pieces.

– Josef Martinez demonstrated outstanding decision-making in front of goal – recording a ratio of 0.29 xG per shot.

– Number 10s Miguel Almiron and Maxi Moralez were involved in more shot-ending sequences than any other MLS players.

You can read the MLS review here.

The NWSL season review will be available on the OptaPro website later this month.
